Course Outline

The focus of English 201 is to elevate the student from a proficient writer to a sophisticated communicator. Building on the foundational recursive writing process, this course explores the ethics of voice, the art of persuasion (rhetoric), and the synthesis of complex ideas. Students will move beyond the 5-paragraph essay to produce a Long-form Inquiry Project that mimics professional or academic journal standards.

Course Objectives

Having gone through this course module, the students should be able to:

  • Deconstruct complex texts to identify rhetorical appeals (Ethos, Pathos, Logos).
  • Master advanced stylistic techniques, including varied syntax, professional tone, and nuanced transitions.
  • Conduct primary and secondary research to support a sustained, 3,000-word long-form project.
  • Execute high-level Peer-to-Peer Guided Reviews, offering substantive feedback on logic and structure rather than just mechanics.
  • Synthesize multiple conflicting viewpoints into a cohesive, well-reasoned argument.
